Their life experience is second-to-none, which is why Staff Defence’s immersive training and role-play helps every course attendee to hard-wire into the brain the new knowledge and learning. The Biographies below demonstrate where and how the Director of Operations and his Trainers have gained such immeasurable first-hand experience in risk management and safety protocols in the most hostile environments imaginable.

Stephen Amphlett

Steve gave 23 years’ service in the Royal Marines Commandos, participating in operations globally. On leaving the Royal Marines, Stephen operated in Iraq, as a private security operative during the post invasion years.

Stephen provided private consultancy and training to a range of government agencies in Somaliland, Kuwait, the Emirates and Oman, focussed on the defence against piracy, combined with oil and gas facilities protection.

More recently, Stephen was appointed as the Senior Training Manager for Pilgrims Group, a large company, specialising in security risk management and consultancy services. Stephen provided operational and training support to members of the international media, Non-government organisations and personnel of the FCO, DFID, British Council and their families, together with locally engaged personnel, living and working in UK Embassies and Consulates globally. Stephen also provided extensive hostile travel safety training to personnel within foreign governments and to large corporates.

On joining Staff Defence Ltd in 2017, Stephen has been working on restructuring the company to provide a range of training programmes in Conflict Management, Personal and Travel Safety, Hostile Environment Awareness Training (HEAT), and First Aid Training to the Media, Corporate Companies, Non-Government Organisations, Charities, and Lone Travellers.

Jim Berry

Jim Berry

Jim previously served in the British Army, where he gained tactical and operational experience in high-readiness units with global combat, counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism deployments. He acquired 15 years’ experience in training and mentoring local indigenous forces. This experience was followed by his expert guidance at UK military training establishments.

Unfortunately, Jim was wounded, whilst serving in Afghanistan.

Jim has previously worked delivering training in Conflict Management, Personal, and Travel Safety, Hostile Environment Awareness Training (HEAT), and First Aid Training to the Media, Corporate Companies, Non-Government Organisations, Charities, and Lone Travellers. Subsequently, Jim was employed as FCO / DFID contractor, delivering operational training and mentoring to governments, NGOs, the media, and indigenous forces worldwide.



Tony Fowles

Tony Fowles

Tony Fowles gave 23 years’ service in the Royal Marines Commandos, skilled as an Assault engineer and a Royal Marines Commando Medic, participating in operations globally. On leaving the Royal Marines, Tony has operated globally as a private security operative.

Tony has experience in delivering Travel Safety, Hostile Environment Awareness Training (HEAT), and First Aid Training to the Media, Corporate Companies, Non-Government Organisations, Charities, and Lone Travellers.

As a medic, Tony has extensive battlefield experience and recently as an offshore medic running a medical centre and providing emergency medical treatment.



Steve Lloyd

Steve Lloyd.

Steve served 20 years, as a firefighter and station commander, during which time, he provided extensive emergency first aid response, as part of his role, as a firefighter.

Steve has experience in delivering First Aid Training, Conflict Management and Staff Defence Personal Safety Foundation Level™ to Corporate Companies and Lone Travellers.

Steve also has an extensive background, training in the world of self-defence and has attained a vast amount of real-world experience of the dangers on the streets, where he has learned how to best avoid becoming a victim of crime and assault.



Natasha Plavecz

Natasha Plavecz

Natasha is a Personal Trainer, Ladies’ Boxing Coach and Martial Artist.

Natasha is also a trained First Aider, with an extensive amount of experience in teaching the Staff Defence Personal Safety Foundation Level™ to Corporate Companies and Lone Travellers.
